International Year of Millets in 2023
In the grand celebration of the International Year of Millets in 2023, the Ganapati Ganeshotsav festival holds a special place in the hearts of people in Mumbai and Maharashtra, India. This vibrant festival is observed with tremendous enthusiasm, both publicly and within homes. One particular Gujarati family in Mumbai has made this festival an artistic expression, aligning it with contemporary themes and meaningful messages.
Over the years, this family has transformed their Ganapati Mandap into a canvas for storytelling. From commemorating events like the Reliance World Cup in 1987 to the Seoul Olympics in 1988, and advocating causes such as “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao,” “Voting – Balloting Machine,” and marking the milestones of India’s independence at 50 and 75 years – their Ganapati decorations have been a creative platform.
In 2023, the Thanawala family once again graces their home with a unique theme. They pay tribute to the International Year of Millets, a cause championed by our Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, who affectionately calls millets – “Shree Anna.”
This year, their Ganapati idols take a novel form – crafted entirely from millets. “Sri Anna,” as they call it, is prominently displayed in their Mandapam, accompanied by information about millets and their health benefits. They also shed light on the “Shri Anna” scheme introduced by the government.
The Ganapati pandal also going to display a postal stamp & Rs. 75/- coin unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In one hand, Lord Ganapati carries the logo of the International Year of Millets, and in the other, a toothpick, symbolizing the importance of cultivating millets for a healthier life.
The Thanawala family extends a warm invitation to all to visit their beautifully decorated Ganapati Mandap and witness this unique fusion of tradition and awareness.

It was served to esteemed guests, earning high praise and international recognition. Dhairya Thanawala, a young member of the family, shared an entrepreneurial tip: opening a millets restaurant could become a resounding success, promoting the adoption of millets for a healthier India.

75 years of India’s Independence
As India completes 75 years of independence, the government of India kickstarted a mahotsav – “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” to commemorate 75 years of Independence.
Thanawalas, a Gujarati family have been celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi by spreading awareness regarding a social topic through their Ganesh pandal since 1987.
Some of the social topics selected by Thanawalas family in the past are Electric Vehicle (2021), Upcycling (2020), Mumbai 2.0 (2019), Statue of Unity (2018) ….. Reliance Cricket World Cup (1987).
This year too, Thanawala family is spreading awareness about India’s achievements and how far India has come post independence by depicting 75 achievements in the Ganpati decoration like Green Revolution, White Revolution, Blue Revolution, UPI, building the World’s second largest army, how the stock market has changed over the years, introducing the mid-day meal scheme.
Along side the decoration, each Aarti is also decorated as per the social theme selected. One Aarti focuses on how the purchasing power has changed in the past 75 years, similarly another Aarti focuses on Fish Production and how it has increased over the years.
Ganesh murti is seen holding a flag on the lines of #harghartiranga and to promote nationalism within each Indian.
